Oz Owalla, The Blue Serpent
Masked vigilante snakeman pretending to be human
Oz was born to a pair of merchants hoping to make it rich in the big city. From a young age he was taught that, when possible, he was to tell people he was a human. Vishkanya were similar enough to humans to pass, so long as no one noticed their eyes, and they felt it might make it easier for the young Oz to fit in with his peers. There aren’t many Vishkanya after all and it was unlikely that the young Oz would meet another of his kind, even in a city. So Oz learned early on how to disguise the obvious features that differentiated him as well as lie. Oz became a pretty good liar. Being a great liar is a marvelous perk to a merchant in training, as it happens. Oz’s parents had the young lad work in their shop to help out and he had a knack for closing the deal and making the sale. His parents’ shop turned a great profit and the immigrant couple prospered. Their good fortune attracted the attention of some less than savory individuals, however. The Gnome Mafia had recently moved into the area and wanted a cut of the profits. They approached Oz’s parents offering “protection” from roustabouts and burglars. In exchange for a small fee, of course. Oz’s father declined the offering, citing the fact that they never had an issue with crime in the neighborhood before. The next night the shop was broken in to and several items stolen. The Gnome Mafia approached again, this time asking for twice the money. Don Coppergreeter explained that if the Owalla’s didn’t pay up such things would most likely continue. Oz’s father again declined, but in private Oz’s parents feared that they may have to give in to the Don’s demands. They couldn’t keep repairing the shop and replacing the stolen goods. Oz was outraged. He waited that night with an old sword that had belonged to his grandfather for the crooks to show up. In the ensuing fight he managed to chase off the mafiosi, but the store was again badly damaged in the skirmish. The next day Oz’s father gave in to the Don’s demands. This was a transformative event for Oz. He felt that he hadn’t been strong enough to protect the family business. He began to train with the sword and hone his skills. Adopting the persona “The Blue Serpent” he started prowling the streets at night, attempting to thwart any illegal dealing of the Gnome Mafia or their like. He hopes to rid the city of their taint, so that people like his parents can again prosper.
